Throughout my life, I cannot remember a time when music was not a part of my life. From my first introduction to playing in a band in 4th grade, to singing in a choir all through high school, to leading my first choir in a church at Colchester Bible Church in Colchester, CT. As life so often does, I have come full circle and am back involved in both playing an instrument and leading a choir. Even though I love both, my passion is with the choir. Playing a musical instrument does not relay a message in words, and it can be a challenge to show your heart through facial expressions when you are almost out of breath holding that last note to the end of the song! :-) But singing... well, that's a whole different story. When you sing praises to God, and the song comes from your heart, your face will show it. And the words convey the message of praise, or thanksgiving, or surrender, or a cry for help, etc.
I did a quick search on the word "sing" in the Bible, and there are 102 verses that have "sing" in them. Many of them are written in the form of a command. For example, Isaiah 12:5 says, "Sing unto the Lord; for He hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth." The Lord commands us to sing to Him! Is that not awesome? Something that we love to do anyway and to find out that we are obeying the Word of God by serving in the choir ministry.
We encourage anyone who has the heart and desire to sing praises to God to join us in worship on Sunday mornings in the choir. Even visitors are encouraged to join with us. I have found in my own experience while traveling around this country that it can help you worship while you are away from home if the church you are visiting allows you to sing with them. And what a great way for us to get to know visitors! We have experienced the working of God in our ministry right here at 12th St with allowing a visitor to sing with us, and afterwards, this visitor received Christ as their Savior, and is now a growing, thriving Christian.
If you have questions about our choir, feel free to contact me; I would love to speak with you.
